Prayer Shawl Ministry

Woven with prayer, given with a blessing

Financial gifts for the purchase of yarn are welcomed! Please indicate that your gift to Hosanna! is for “Prayer Shawl Ministry.”

What is a Prayer Shawl?

Prayer shawls are a tangible reminder that God’s love enfolds us - and the prayers of his people surround us - in times of sadness or sickness, as well as times of joy and celebration. Prayer shawls remind us of God’s caring presence and the loving support within the community of faith. The shawls are also an invitation to be people of prayer - faithful in offering intercessions, thanksgivings and blessings in the name of Jesus.

How do I make a Prayer Shawl?

Prayer shawls may be knitted or crocheted, woven or sewn, quilted or machine knitted. They can be made in a group setting at church or individually at home. Patterns and instructions are available in the church office. A soft yarn, such as Lion Brand® Homespun® is recommended, and any color or design may be used.

Begin each shawl with a prayer of blessing and pray as you knit or crochet, asking God to grant healing and comfort, blessing and hope to the recipient.

How can I give or receive a Prayer Shawl?

Prayer shawls of several colors, sizes and designs are available. Please contact Pastor Patricia Baglien if you would like to give someone a prayer shawl.

Suggested occasions for giving a prayer shawl:
Death or loss
Hospitalization, illness or injury
Weddings or anniversaries
Pregnancy/birth
Baptism
Graduation
Milestone events
Moving away/new job

Prayer cards for various occasions are also available to accompany the prayer shawl. You may choose to personally deliver the prayer shawl or go as a group. Either way, this gift is meant to be given with a prayer!

Want to work on prayer shawls with others?
On the first Saturday of each month from 10:00am – Noon, prayer shawl ministry participants gather at Hosanna! for an informal time of knitting, crocheting and fellowship.
